Shooting downtown, both suspects in custody

On December 31st at approximately 8:40 p.m. officers responded to a shooting at 8th Avenue and Pine Street.  Preliminary investigation indicates that there was some sort of disturbance between two groups of males near 8th Avenue and Pine Street.  It is unknown at this time what precipitated the disturbance.  Shortly thereafter shots were fired on the southeast corner of 8th Avenue and Pine Street.  The two groups then began to disperse.

Upon arrival officers located two adult male victims who had sustained gunshot wounds.  A 24-year-old victim was located north of the intersection and an 18-year-old victim was located south of the intersection.  SFD medics were called to the scene and transported both victims to Harborview Medical Center (HMC) for treatment.

The 18-year-old victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries; the 24-year-old victim sustained life-threatening injuries.

One suspect (shooter) fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival.  During an area search officers located him east of Boren Avenue near Pine Street and took him into custody.   He was transported to HMC to evaluate a possible knee injury sustained during his flight from the shooting scene.  Upon release the 23-year-old suspect will be booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Assault.

It was initially believed that there was a second suspect (shooter) outstanding.  Further investigation by Gang detectives indicates that there are no suspects outstanding — the 24-year-old male victim located north of the intersection is now believed to be the second shooter (suspect #2).

Officers recovered a handgun from a trash dumpster in the vicinity of the second suspect/victim during a canvassing of the area.  The gun was placed into evidence for further processing.

The second suspect/victim will be booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Assault upon release from HMC.

Gang Unit detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.
