On 6/24/12, at approximately 10:30 p.m., 911 received calls of a hit and run and shots fired near Benefit Park at Beacon Av S and Carkeek Dr S. According to the callers a white PT cruiser was involved. An officer spotted the PT cruiser and noticed the passenger throwing a baseball sized white item from the car into the brush as it sped away from him.
The vehicle was stopped at MLK Jr Wy S and S. Henderson St and both occupants were detained. Numerous officers were now involved and flagged down along both Beacon Av S and Carkeek Dr S. Witnesses described the PT cruiser and a green Honda as driving recklessly, banging into each other, and possibly exchanging gunfire. Officers canvassed the area, but couldn’t find any evidence of gunfire.
Because of the thick underbrush where the white item was thrown from the car a SPD firearms dog and drug dog were brought to the scene. The drug dog found the item (large ball of meth) which was collected and placed into evidence.
The white PT cruiser was taken to the processing room to await a warrant. The green Honda is still outstanding. Both suspects were investigated and released from the South Precinct pending further investigation.
