Gang Unit Detectives track down man who opened fire on a vehicle that had two toddlers aboard

On late Sunday evening, Gang Unit detectives, SWAT, South ACT and Patrol tracked down and arrested a man responsible for a shooting.  On 07-20-12 at approximately 6:45 p.m., officers in the area of 15th Ave S and S College heard several shots fired. When officers arrived they located a vehicle that had been shot at by a suspect who was later identified. An area search was conducted for the suspect but he was not located. The suspect fired at a vehicle that not only contained two adult victims but also had two toddler children inside.

Several witnesses were located and interviewed by Patrol and Gang Unit Detectives. Detectives confirmed who the suspect was through witness interviews. Detectives then began working the case attempting to track down the suspect. Over the next few days detectives followed up on several leads eventually learning that the suspect was staying in an apartment at 48th Ave S and S Henderson.

Detectives located the suspect vehicle parked in front of the building. The detectives set up on the location and called in the South Anti Crime Unit. Undercover officers contained the location and SWAT was notified. Although SWAT had another incident occurring in the North Precinct they freed up officers to assist on this case.  Surveillance was maintained on the location and officers observed the suspect exit his unit for short periods of time.

Eventually the suspect exited his apartment and began walking to his car. SWAT moved in and took the suspect into custody without incident. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded to the processing room and a search warrant will be served by detectives on the car. During the initial search of the apartment a bag containing bullets was located. The suspect was transported to Police Headquarters for processing. The 21-year-old man was booked for Investigation of Assault.
