A man was killed this morning after a BMW 745 sedan struck a concrete barrier and a wall and overturned near the Washington State Convention Center downtown. On January 5th at approximately 2:04 a.m. a uniformed sergeant on patrol downtown came upon a one-vehicle collision involving extensive property damage near 6th Avenue and Union Street.
Preliminary investigation indicates that there were three adult males on board the BMW traveling southbound on I-5. As the driver attempted to negotiate the Union Street exit he lost control of the vehicle and struck a concrete barrier and a wall. The vehicle subsequently overturned and came to rest a short distance east of 6th Avenue and Union Street. Preliminary indications are that excessive speed was a factor in the collision.
Fire department medics responded and pronounced one of the male passengers dead at the scene (it is unknown at this time where the deceased man had been sitting in the vehicle). The deceased male appears to be in his late 20’s to early 30’s. The driver and the other passenger were both transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 31-year-old male driver, who was under police guard, was released from the hospital this afternoon.
Officers subsequently booked him into the King County Jail for Vehicular Homicide.
Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.
