Officers are actively investigating a hit and run fatality collision that occurred at 12th Avenue South and South Dearborn Street early this morning.
At approximately 4:41 a.m officers responded to a 911 call of a body lying in the street in the 1200 block of South Dearborn Street. Fire department medics responded and declared the pedestrian, a 34-year-old man, dead at the scene.
Based on the condition of the deceased man along with the physical evidence at the scene, it appeared that he had been dragged by a motor vehicle after being struck.
Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives responded to the scene and will be handling the active and on-going investigation.
South Dearborn Street near the 12th Avenue Bridge is shut down and traffic is being re-routed while detectives conduct their on-scene investigation.
The road will not fully re-open until approximately 8:00 a.m.
