A 47-yr-old man sustained serious injuries when he was struck by a vehicle that pinned him between the suspect vehicle and a gas pump. On January 27 2014, just shortly after 1:00 p.m., a white Chevy Tahoe was stopped facing northbound on 51 Av S where it intersects with Rainier Av S. The male sat through a green light, but accelerated rapidly once his light turned red.
The Tahoe crossed lanes of travel, travelled through a restaurant parking lot, drove over a metal chain link fence and continued, striking a male as he stood pumping gas at the Safeway gas pumps located at 9262 Rainier Av S.
Significant damage was sustained to both the victim’s vehicle as well as the gas pumps. SFD deemed the scene safe prior to the scene investigation; they stayed on scene for the duration of the investigation for potential hazards associated with the disruption of the pumps.
SFD treated the 47-yr-old adult male pedestrian on scene; he was transported to HMC via Medics with a significant arm injury and possible internal injuries.
The 30 year-old male driver of the Chevy Tahoe was transported to HMC via AMR for precautionary reasons. As is routine, a Drug Recognition Expert officer responded and evaluated the driver of the Chevy Tahoe. It was suspected he was under the influence of a controlled substance. He was placed under arrest, a legal blood draw was performed, and pending his release from HMC, the male was expected to be booked into King County Jail for Investigation of Vehicular Assault.
