Seattle police negotiators and a SWAT team were called to the University District Monday after a man attacked a University of Washington police officer and barricaded himself inside a trailer.
Just before noon on Monday, UW police received a report that a man armed with a baseball bat was damaging a telephone police outside a UW lecture hall near 8th Avenue NE and Northlake Place.
When University of Washington police attempted to contact the man, he sprayed an officer with pepper spray, ran to a small trailer hitched to the back of a pickup truck down the street, and barricaded himself inside.
After UWPD called Seattle police for assistance, SPD dispatched police negotiators and SWAT to the scene. Negotiators have been in contact with the man, who has demanded to speak with state legislators and refused to come out of his trailer.
Officers believe the man may have other weapons inside the trailer, in addition to the baseball bat, and police have closed off foot traffic on the University Bridge and several streets between 6th Ave and 8th Ave NE along Northlake Place.
Update:
Shortly before 4:30 pm, the suspect walked out of his trailer and surrendered to officers.
