Officers arrested a man and recovered a stolen firearm after he was spotted prowling cars Sunday afternoon.
A witness called 911 Sunday at 1:15 PM when she saw a man snooping around parked cars in the 1500 block of 23 Ave. S. The caller said the 64-year-old suspect smashed a car window, removed a water bottle and took a swig, just to toss the container in some nearby bushes while walking away.
Officers arrived on scene and recovered the bottle for fingerprints when they received another report of a car prowl just blocks away. The second caller said the suspect removed a bag containing a handgun before running from the area. As officers were leaving the scene they received a third report of a man smashing car widows, this time near 2800 S. Massachusetts St.
Officers quickly converged on the area and saw the suspect described in the three previous calls walking through Sam Smith Park. The suspect spotted officers and ran, only to be caught a few block away.
A K-9 unit helped search for some of the stolen property and discovered the stolen bag with the pistol stashed in Coleman Playground.
The suspect was booked into King County Jail for multiple counts of theft and property damage.
