Police arrested a man early Sunday after he brought a six-pack of beer to the midnight service at a Capitol Hill church, which doesn’t have a midnight service.
Officers were called to the church in the 1100 block of Harvard Avenue around 1:15 AM after a witness spotted the suspect smashing a window. The witness informed the suspect he was calling 911, but the undeterred suspect continued into the church.
Police arrived at the scene, found the intoxicated suspect pacing around an altar, and took him into custody. When officers questioned him about the burglary, after learning nothing had been taken, the suspect disputed that he’d broken into the church, and said he was under the impression churches were open 24 hours a day.
Medics took the 47-year-old suspect to Harborview Medical Center so he could receive treatment for a hand laceration sustained during the break-in. Officers later booked him into the King County Jail for investigation of burglary.
