Car Prowl Suspect Arrested, Stolen Handgun Recovered in Belltown

A suspect is in custody after he was arrested for a car prowl and a stolen handgun was recovered early Saturday morning in the Belltown neighborhood, thanks to the assistance of a watchful security officer.

Just after midnight on Saturday, March 25th, a victim called 911 to report that his vehicle had been broken into and that his semi-automatic handgun, which had been locked inside a lockbox inside, had been stolen.  A security officer nearby had witnessed the suspect rummaging around inside the vehicle and took cell phone video of the suspect as he left the area of 7th Avenue and Blanchard Street.  Officers searched for the suspect but did not locate him and took the theft report from the victim.  About an hour after the initial call, officers were on another call at 3rd and Blanchard when they observed a suspect closely resembling the suspect from the cell phone video.  The suspect was detained and officers determined that the man was indeed the car prowl suspect.  The suspect was arrested and his backpack was searched.  Officers located the stolen firearm inside.

The suspect is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms.  He was later booked into the King County Jail for theft of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.
