Two men were arrested Thursday after they stole a bed from a South Seattle furniture store and tried to make their getaway on foot across Rainier Avenue.
Just before 4 PM, Seattle police were summoned to the 1900 block of Rainier Ave. after receiving a report of several people fighting in the street.
When they arrived, officers spoke to the owner of a furniture store, who said a 64-year-old man had come into his shop a short time earlier and tried to purchase furniture with a check. When the owner informed him the store didn’t accept checks, the man left the store and stood outside for a bit, until he was joined by a 51-year-old man. The two suspects then grabbed a mattress and bed frame–worth about $200–from outside the store and began hauling them across five lanes of traffic on Rainier Avenue while on foot.
The store’s owner called 911 and chased after the men, who knocked the phone out of his hand and attacked him when he tried to grab hold of the mattress.
Officers arrested the two suspects and booked them into the King County Jail for robbery. The store owner was not seriously injured in the incident.
