South Precinct officers arrested a man Sunday night after he ran from police, ditching his car and his young child inside.
An officer driving near Rainier Avenue South and South Byron Street at 9 p.m. spotted a car traveling well over the speed limit. The officer pulled behind the car, which then pulled into a nearby bank parking lot. The 28-year-old suspect exited the car and ran away. The officer began to chase the suspect on foot but noticed a small child sitting in the front passenger seat. The officer stopped, allowing other officers to continue on, and spoke with the child who stated his dad had been drinking. He then pointed to a can of beer sitting on the floor.
The suspect was later taken into custody when he was found hiding behind a gas station dumpster in the 2800 block of Rainier Avenue South. Officers found the suspect had two felony warrants and later booked him into King County Jail for them, reckless endangerment, and a litany of traffic crimes. The child was handed over to a family member.
