Police are searching for a man after he carjacked a woman in the Central District while in an apparent state of crisis yesterday afternoon.
Officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Rainer Avenue South around 3 p.m. for a report of a man acting erratically and running into traffic. Officers arrived and found a black male in his 30’s with a shaved head, wearing black pants and a white shirt standing in front of a Metro bus. Officers approached the man who yelled, “You’re not a real cop” and ran away still in traffic. Officers chased the man but lost him in some nearby yards.
Minutes later, while officers were searching for the man, witnesses began calling 911 to report a man matching the earlier suspect’s description had pushed a motorist out of their vehicle before driving away in the stolen SUV.
Officers found the stolen car in the 1400 block of East Yesler Way but the suspect was nowhere to be found. The victim of the carjacking later told officers the man had forced his way into her SUV and that she was not injured in the process. Additional people called 911 to report the man had been spotted attempting to steal additional cars but had been unsuccessful.
Officers impounded the stolen car and will process it for fingerprints. If you have any information in this case please call the non-emergency line a (206) 625-5011 and request to speak with an officer.
