South Precinct officers arrested a 29-year-old man after he led them on a foot chase after fleeing a stolen car last night in the Rainier Valley.
Shortly after 6:00 pm, officers were patrolling near Rainier Avenue South and South Holly Street when they routinely ran a license plate of a vehicle. That license plate came back as an unverified stolen vehicle. By the time the information came back, the suspect vehicle, a 2009 Honda Civic, had already turned westbound on South Holly Street, so the officers attempted to locate it. The officers found the car parked behind an apartment complex in the 6600 block of Rainier Avenue South. As the officers drove toward the car, the driver got out and ran through the parking lot, jumping a fence and continuing to run through yards westbound. A 33-year-old female passenger was also in the car and detained by an officer while the other officer attempted to locate the fleeing suspect. The vehicle was verified as stolen.
Additional officers responded to the scene in an attempt to locate the suspect. Officers set up containment for the responding K-9 team. An officer located the suspect hiding behind a parked car attempting to hide from the police near 44th Avenue South and South Warsaw Street. The suspect then fled southbound across the street when he noticed the patrol cars in the area. The suspect was finally caught when he ran into a backyard and attempt to hide behind a shed near 44th and South Holly Street.
The male suspect was later booked into the King County Jail for investigation of possession of stolen property. The female was interviewed and released from the scene. The owner of the car was notified and responded to the scene to retrieve her vehicle. Detectives will handle the follow up investigation.
