Police arrested a 57-year-old man for burglary after he tried to use a shopping cart as a getaway vehicle in a late-night heist at a Rainier Avenue smoke shop.
A witness called police around 1:30 AM on June 16th after hearing the sound of breaking glass at a nearby smoke shop in the 4200 block of Rainier Avenue South. As the witness peered across the street, they saw a man jump out of the shop’s window while carrying a trash can, which he threw into a shopping cart before wheeling his way down Rainier Avenue South.
Police spotted the man about a block away in the 3500 Block of S Genesee Street and detained him. They found he had filled a garbage can with over 200 packs of cigarettes–which the shop owner estimated were worth $20,000—and part of a cash register. Officers booked the man into the King County Jail for burglary.
