Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) detectives are on the scene of a fatality collision that occurred earlier this morning on Airport Way South. One person was declared deceased at the scene and another person was transported to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
At approximately 7:00 am Tuesday a patrol officer attempted to pull over a Mercedes SUV for a traffic infraction in the 1000 block of 4th Avenue South. The Mercedes sped off at a high rate of speed, drove through a red light, and rear ended a parked vehicle. Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but did broadcast the suspect vehicle description information.
A few minutes later the Mercedes, still speeding, was travelling southbound on Airport Way South when it collided with a semi-truck travelling northbound at South Hinds Street. The two vehicles struck each other head on. There were two occupants in the SUV, one was killed and the other sustained life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
TCIS detectives responded to the scene and began the investigation. Airport Way South was shut down in both directions as detectives processed the scene.
This remains an active and on-going scene.
