Police are investigating after shots were fired and a stolen car was abandoned in the Rainier Valley neighborhood late Thursday night.

Officers patrolling near South Kenyon Street and Renton Avenue South around 11 pm heard multiple gunshots in the area. The officers drove towards the sound and spotted two cars, a Chevy Malibu and Toyota Camry, stopped at the intersection. The occupants of the Malibu abandoned the car and got into the Camry which then drove away.

The officers approached the empty Malibu and saw that the occupants had left behind multiple firearms including an AR-15-style rifle and a pistol with an extended magazine. Officers also found multiple shell casings nearby as well as some homes that were damaged in the gunfire. A computer check of the plates on the Malibu revealed that it had been stolen in a robbery in Rainier Beach earlier this week.

Police were unable to locate anyone with injuries. The South Precinct is adding additional patrols to the area and working with the units from the Investigations Bureau.
