On 02-19-2021 at 1410 hours, officers responded to a report of a trespasser at 1101 Madison (Medical Tower) called in by building security. The subject who was trespassing was causing a disturbance and throwing items at citizens trying to walk through the building. When officers arrived on scene the subject refused to cooperate with them and leave the facility when requested to do so. When officers attempted to physically remove the subject, he assaulted the student officer by kicking him repeatedly. The assault caused pain and minor but evident injuries to the student officer. The subject continued to resist officers’ efforts to control him and officers had to conduct a soft take-down and placed the subject into a seated position. The responding sergeant noticed several minor injuries to the subject. It could not conclusively be determined if these injuries were caused by officers or were sustained before officer arrival, so a type 2 Use of Force investigation was initiated.
