On 04-14-2021 at 2351 hours, officers were assisting the Washington State Patrol with an unrelated call in the 1600 block of Lakeview Blvd E due to WSP limited available staff. While processing an arrest for the unrelated call, a full-sized semi-truck loaded with two trailers of corrosive liquid acid lost control at full speed striking the cement retaining wall, causing the semi to override the wall and metal guardrail. The semi sheered about 500 feet of guardrail from the cement wall sending large pieces of debris to the park below. When the semi came to rest the cab was wedged in between the gap of north and southbound lanes of I-5. The cab and its sole occupant dangled about 200 feet off the ground. An off-duty SPD Sgt was first on scene, managing the scene until east patrol and other units from the city and WSP could arrived. Seattle Fire was able to successfully extract the driver who sustained minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. Once WSP had auxiliary assistance to maintain an extended closure, SPD cleared the scene. At the time of this report SB I-5 was still significantly impacted. PIO was briefed. It is unknown what caused the collision.
