Yesterday morning around 7:30 a.m., police responded to a collision where a vehicle had collided with a pillar near the intersection of Southwest Spokane Street and 26th Avenue Southwest.
It was reported to police that the vehicle was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed along Southwest Spokane Street when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a cement pillar.
The impact caused debris to shatter the glass of a nearby bus stop located next to the pillar. The passenger had to be extracted from the vehicle when Seattle Fire arrived on the scene.
The 20-year-old male driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the collision, but the passenger, a 16-year-old male, sustained life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to Harborview Medical Center via SFD. While at the hospital, the 16-year-old male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
An SPD Drug Recognition Expert assisted with the DUI investigation of the driver, who showed signs of impairment.
The suspect driver was arrested for vehicular homicide and will be booked into King County Jail once medically cleared.
Traffic Collision Investigation Squad responded to the scene and will be lead in this case.
