Arson Suspect Arrested after Mount Baker Apartment Building Fire

A 40-year-old man was arrested after several fires were set in an apartment in the Mount Baker neighborhood on Dec. 17.

Seattle police were dispatched to the apartment building in the 2800 block of South McClellan Street after reports of a fire in a unit at about 7:24 p.m. The Seattle Fire Department responded and put out the flames in the unoccupied apartment. The resident was not home at the time.

Investigators determined the three fires in the unit were set intentionally. Fire marshals discovered remnants of fireworks that appeared to be stripped bottle rockets and firecrackers used in the fires. They also found tape on two fire sprinkler heads that prevented them from properly activating and all the smoke detectors were removed from the apartment. The building suffered a significant amount of water damage.

Officers developed probable cause for the man who lives in the apartment. Once he returned to the building, he was taken into custody and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of arson and unrelated warrants.
