SWAT Safely Takes Man into Custody During Burglary, Barricade Incident in South Seattle

Seattle police safely took a man into custody following an intense burglary and barricade incident in South Seattle on Jan. 30.

SPD officers were called to an apartment complex in the 3600 block of 33rd Avenue South at 3:58 p.m. after neighbors told dispatchers there was a man in crisis breaking into apartments and committing multiple burglaries. He was also reported to have been seen with a knife.

Witnesses reported the 62-year-old suspect exited his apartment and started throwing items, including flowerpots, at other people in the area. The suspect also kicked in several apartment doors and unlawfully entered those units. In at least one of them, the suspect caused damage.

The suspect then returned to his own apartment and could be heard inside causing more destruction.

Officers knocked at his door and announced themselves. They could also see him through his apartment window apparently armed with a knife.

The Seattle Police Department’s Hostage Negotiation Unit responded, but was unable to negotiate with the suspect.

SWAT also responded to the scene and continued negotiation tactics, but they were unsuccessful with the suspect. A search warrant was then executed at the man’s apartment and he was safely taken into custody.

The suspect was evaluated by Seattle Fire Department medics and was transported to the King County Jail.
