Officers Arrest Man Who Smashed Windows of 8 Cars in Pioneer Square Causing Nearly $20k in Damage

Seattle police have arrested a 54-year-old man after witnesses saw him smashing the windows of eight cars parked in Pioneer Square on Wednesday.

Officers were called to the 100 block of South Washington Street on April 9 at about 2:26 p.m. They found the cars with their windshields smashed. Some also had rear windows smashed.

As police talked with witnesses, they learned the 54-year-old suspect walked from Occidental Park and smashed the windows using a tree branch and a wooden stake as he passed the cars walking westbound on South Washington Street toward Alaskan Way South.

Shortly after, Seattle police officers found the suspect at South Washington Street and Alaskan Way South and detained him. He was arrested for eight counts of Malicious Mischief 2.

Police worked with owners of the vehicles who arrived to find the damage and tried to contact those who were not in the area.

Officers recovered a tree branch in the 100 block of South Washington Street that witnesses said the suspect used to damage five cars. They also found a large wooden stake with glass shards embedded in it in the 90 block of South Washington Street.

It’s estimated the suspect caused nearly $20,000 in damage. Following his arrest, he was booked into the King County Jail.
