The Seattle Police Department’s Community Response Group (CRG) and patrol officers successfully countered illegal street racers Saturday night.
On May 10, at about 11:30 p.m., more than 100 street racers gathered near the 3500 block of 1st Ave South when a large rave gave the racers an audience.
The group took over the intersection of Spokane Street and 1st Avenue South and performed illegal maneuvers. CRG and patrol officers quickly flooded into the area to stop them.
Police lights, sirens, and SPD’s Long Range Acoustic Device dispersed the group of spectators and vehicles. Shortly thereafter, a group of about 20 vehicles gathered near 12th Avenue South and South Jackson Street.
CRG teams and patrol officers flooded into this area and successfully dispersed this group again.
Eventually, about 10 remaining vehicles regrouped and loitered in a parking lot near 4th Avenue and Denny Way. CRG kept watch on them until they left the city.
Some vehicles disobeyed traffic lights as they left. Police resources captured their license plates and citations will be sent to the registered owners.
By 1:00 a.m., all of the street racers had left the city.
The coordinated teamwork by CRG officers and patrol resources kept the city safe and prevented street racers from getting out of control.
