On July 7, Seattle Police Officer German Barreto and Detective Brian Pritchard visited a local school summer camp as part of “Community Helpers” week, meeting with children ages 1 to 6 to talk about police work and community safety.
The officers joined campers in a classroom setting, where they discussed their daily duties and explained what to do in an emergency, including when to call 911. Officers showed their equipment and explained how each item is used.
The children actively participated, asking thoughtful questions. Each camper received educational coloring books, squishy toys, frisbees and other small giveaways.
Several children wore festive summer outfits, including a girl in beautiful blue and brown cowgirl boots and a boy dressed as a superhero in a green and purple cape.
The visit ended with a close-up look at a patrol car. Officers demonstrated the lights and loudspeaker and answered questions about patrol work.
Community engagement remains a priority for the Seattle Police Department, and the smiles on the children’s faces made the visit especially rewarding.
