Seattle Police Department Honors Courageous Youth as “Chief for a Day”

The Seattle Police Department is not only focused on keeping Seattle community members safe, but we are also carrying out Chief Barnes’ vision of partnering with residents and local organizations to build long-lasting relationships.

SPD is honored to recognize 11-year-old Inomar “Ino” Reyes Jr., as our “Chief for a Day”, a title he will proudly hold during the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s (WSCJTC) program on August 28, 2025.

Ino’s strength, resilience, and positivity inspire everyone who meets him. Diagnosed in March 2024 with leukemia, Ino received specialized care at Seattle Children’s Hospital, including participation in a clinical trial.

Today, he is in remission and thriving. In his own words: “I feel great!”

Thanks to a generous grant from the Seattle Police Foundation, SPD is proud to provide Ino and his family with a range of meaningful experiences and opportunities to celebrate his strength and courage.

As part of his role as “Chief for a Day”, Ino celebrated with SPD and the greater Seattle community. He rode as a VIP in a convertible car during the 2025 Seafair Torchlight Parade on July 26, an iconic city event that draws thousands to downtown Seattle.

On August 13, Ino attended an SPD tour experience including the following: Showcase K9 and Traffic Unit Motorcycles, Quartermaster facility, tour and family portrait at the SPD Photo Lab, lunch at Jack’s BBQ for the family. The experience ended with the SPD Harbor Unit including a ride on boats.

At the end of the day, we asked Ino about his favorite part of the experience. He smiled and said, “The harbor big boat.” That moment said it all.

More activities are planned leading up to the “Chief for a Day” event at WSCJTC.

Please stay tuned for more amazing plans involving Ino.

A special thanks to our program partners: Seattle Children’s Hospital, Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, 911 Supply, Seafair, Seattle Police Foundation, Mariners organization and Seafair Clowns.
