Police Arrest Reckless DUI Driver, Video Evidence Captured by SPD’s Real Time Crime Center

Seattle police officers arrested a 29-year-old man earlier this month for driving under the influence (DUI) and other crimes in North Seattle.

On Aug. 3, at about 6:15 p.m., patrol officers found a car driving recklessly on Aurora Avenue North near North 109th Street. The driver went faster than other motorists and passed many of them in the center lane. Officers attempting to catch up to the vehicle saw it driving at an extremely high rate-of-speed.

When officers caught up to the car at North 130th Street, the driver ran a red light in front of them. Police initiated a high-risk stop and detained the driver.

Inside the car, they found a passenger with two beer cans. Officers performed sobriety tests on the driver and detected signs of alcohol impairment. They placed the suspect under arrest and took him to the North Precinct where they administered a breath alcohol analysis on him. His alcohol level was over twice the legal limit.

In addition to being impaired, the suspect’s actions of “swerving, running red lights, and extremely dangerous speeds coupled with his high level of intoxication placed him and [his passenger] at grave risk of being involved in a major collision,” according to the police report.

Police booked the suspect into the King County Jail for DUI, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangerment.

While investigating, officers asked the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) to look for video evidence of the car’s movements on Aurora. At various intersections, RTCC found several videos showing the suspect running red lights and driving recklessly.

Seattle police referred charges to the City Attorney’s Office.
