Seattle police officers arrested a 55-year-old man for assaulting a woman in the Chinatown-International District last night.
On Aug. 20, at about 9:55 p.m., patrol officers responded to a report of a woman screaming near 12th Avenue South and South King Street. They found a 55-year-old woman “moaning in pain and clutching her right arm,” according to the police report.
She told officers her attacker made her fear for her life.
The Seattle Fire Department arrived and provided medical treatment to the victim. An ambulance took her to Harborview Medical Center for further care.
An analyst in SPD’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) reviewed the camera at South King Street and found video footage of the attacks.
RTCC video shows the man assaulting the victim as she sat on a concrete barrier near the sidewalk. Following an argument, he hit the woman with his hand. He continued to try to hit and kick her. She defended herself and backed away from him.
The man left the area. Shortly thereafter, he returned wielding a pipe and struck the woman with his newly acquired weapon. The victim is seen using her right arm to defend herself while the suspect strikes her. Ultimately, she ran away from him into the street as he followed after her, weapon in hand.
Officers found the suspect nearby and arrested him. They booked him into the King County Jail for Investigation of Assault.
Detectives in the Homicide & Assault Unit are assigned to this case.
The Seattle Police Department recently launched the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). Located at SPD headquarters, the center integrates various video and data streams for enhanced analysis and investigation of crime incidents. Find more information about the Real Time Crime Center here.
