Seattle police detectives are investigating the shooting of a 28-year-old man following a felony domestic violence (DV) assault of a 25-year-old woman in Yesler Terrace last night.
On Sept. 1 at 11:21 p.m., officers responded to a shooting near Broadway and East Jefferson Street. There, they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. Police provided him medical aid until the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) arrived and continued treatment. SFD transported him to Harborview Medical Center (HMC) in critical condition.
Also on scene were a 25-year-old woman, and her ex-partner, who is the father of her child. Police identified this 25-year-old man as the shooter. He cooperated with police, and they detained him.
Before the shooting, officers determined that a DV assault occurred between the young woman and her boyfriend, the now-injured 28 year old. While she attempted to leave him, he assaulted her. The victim sought help by calling her ex-partner to come get her.
When this man arrived to help her move out of her place, her live-in boyfriend began chasing and assaulting her ex-partner and threatened to kill him. This man, armed with a gun and fearing for his life, shot the boyfriend multiple times.
According to police, the boyfriend also threatened to disarm the ex-partner and use the firearm against him.
Police processed the scene and recovered the gun. Officers transported the ex-partner to Seattle Police Headquarters (HQ) to be interviewed by detectives in the Gun Violence Reduction Unit (GVRU). Once doctors evaluated the DV victim, transported from the scene to HMC, police also took her to speak with detectives at HQ.
Following the interview, detectives released the shooter from police custody.
Due to the earlier DV incident involving the woman and her now ex-boyfriend, officers determined that he assaulted her via strangulation before the shooting occurred. Officers established probable cause to arrest him for felony assault and unlawful imprisonment.
At the time of the DV report, the ex-boyfriend, and now suspect, remained in intensive care. Police will book him into King County Jail when he is discharged from the hospital.
This is an open and active investigation assigned to GVRU detectives. The DV assault will be investigated by detectives in the DV Unit.
