As the holidays approach at a blistering pace we decided to slow down and take a look back to the 50’s for some safety tips. So, grab a hot cocoa, cozy up next to the space heater, and take a brief look back at this Blotter post from November 31st, 1953
Author’s Note: There is no November 31st. There was no Blotter back then. This is all made up. Just go with it.
Take Your Sweetie Out For a Stroll Around the Shops
Yes indeed, friends, the holiday season has sashayed into the Emerald City, and along with it comes our annual reminder. A safe shopper is a happy shopper. So, before you don your finest wool coat and head downtown to pick up gifts for the whole family, let’s review a few seasonal safety tips.
Keep A Handy Grip on Your Packages
Packages tend to multiply like snowflakes this time of year. As you stroll from Frederick & Nelson to The Bon Marché, be sure those shopping bags are secured snuggly in your hands. A dropped parcel in a crosswalk is no one’s idea of holiday cheer.
Protect Your Purse and Pocketbook
While Downtown is generally as wholesome as a Bing Crosby holiday special, the season can attract a pickpocket. Gents, keep those wallets in your front pocket. Ladies, hold your handbags close, especially in store entrances and near holiday displays.
Step Lively, But Look Both Ways
The streets are shining and slick from drizzle. Keep an eye on streetcar tracks and curbs as you make your way between stores. The hustle and bustle of Pine Street is no place for hasty steps. Take your time and keep a sure step.
Parking Smart is A Holiday Art
Planning to drive? Parking fills up faster than Santa’s workshop in December. Choose well-lit lots, lock your automobile and tuck those purchases out of sight. Even in our fair city, temptation can turn the holidays sour.
Watch the Clock and the Weather
Winter evenings come early in Seattle. If you plan to wander from Nordstrom’s shoe store down to Westlake for some caroling, keep an eye on the time and bring a warm coat. The rain doesn’t care how dapper you look.
What a fantastic look back at the past! Be safe out there, and keep your sweetie close.
