Multiple Teens in Custody After Shooting at Police, Eluding in Stolen SUV on I-5

Multiple teens, 15-17 years old, are in custody after shooting at a Seattle police officer and eluding cops in a stolen SUV on the I-5 freeway last night.

On Nov. 29 at about 9:00 p.m., Community Response Group (CRG) officers, conducting proactive patrols in North Seattle, attempted to stop a Dodge Durango SUV driving erratically and at a high rate-of-speed on Aurora Avenue North. The vehicle fled from the cops, but they did not pursue it.

A short time later, plain police vehicles found the SUV parked in South Seattle and were directing patrol officers towards the vehicle when it began moving again. While going south on I-5, an occupant inside the SUV fired several rounds at a CRG officer in a plain vehicle.

The officer did not get injured, and no Seattle police officers returned fire. During the shooting, “a witness vehicle was struck and bullet fragments were left in the witnesses lap,” according to the police report.

CRG and patrol officers pursued the SUV south on I-5 into Tukwila, WA, and ended the pursuit at South 188th Street and Military Road South with a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver. Police took multiple suspects into custody including three teen girls, ages 15-17, and a 16-year-old boy, who ran from the vehicle.

Officers recovered a handgun near the abandoned vehicle and recovered a second gun from the teen boy, who also had a felony warrant for Robbery. Two more male suspects ran from the SUV. Multiple police agencies responded to search for them, including a police K9 team, but the suspects got away.

Officers transported the SUV to the Vehicle Processing Room for further evidence search.

A short time later, a man with a gunshot wound to his leg arrived at Valley Medical Center in Renton, WA. GVRU detectives responded to assist in the investigation and determine the nature of his injury.

Police booked the four teen suspects into juvenile detention at the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children & Family Justice Center. The charges include:

  • Assault in the 1st Degree (x2)
  • Possession of a Stolen Vehicle
  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
  • Eluding a Police Vehicle

This continues to be an open and active investigation assigned to GVRU detectives. Anyone with information is asked to call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000. Anonymous tips are accepted.
