The Seattle Police Department awarded Officer Albert Khandzhayan with the Medal of Courage following his actions during a domestic violence robbery and kidnapping last year. This is the Department’s third highest award, given to employees who display courage and bravery in the line of duty.
On May 3, 2025, patrol officers in West Seattle responded to reports of the woman’s ex-boyfriend breaking out her window, dragging her out of her car, and stealing it with her three children inside. The victim had an active restraining order against the suspect at the time.
While searching the area, Ofc. Khandzhayan found the stolen vehicle at a nearby gas station and radioed for backup. The suspect immediately ran from Ofc. Khandzhayan and he chased after the suspect by himself for over three minutes, across a 4-lane highway, while directing officers to his location.
Ofc. Khandzhayan and additional SPD officers arrested the suspect for multiple felonies and booked him into the King County Jail. Officers safely reunited the children with their mother.
According to Sgt. Joseph Macniac, “He displayed immense bravery and courage by taking immediate action, without regard to his own safety. He chased this suspect in incredibly dangerous circumstances in an unfamiliar area and by himself. His actions ensured the safe return of the children to their mother and the capture of this extremely dangerous suspect.”
