This update has been provided by Seattle Police Homicide Detectives concerning the homicide investigation near 3rd Avenue and Clay Street on 9/6/2026.
On September 6th, 2026, shortly after 12:42 a.m., SPD officers received and responded to reports of a shooting that was related to a street takeover at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Clay Street.
Officers found a 20-year-old man in the 300 block of Clay Street suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest and leg. Other officers found a 21-year-old man in the 300 block of Denny Way suffering from gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
Officers provided aid until Seattle Fire Department medics arrived at the scenes and took over care. Both men were transported to Harborview Medical Center (HMC). The 20-year-old man located in the 300 block of Clay Street, despite life-saving efforts, died at the hospital.
The 21-year-old man located in the 300 block of Denny Way was transported in critical condition and remains hospitalized. Detectives subsequently obtained a statement from the 21-year-old man about his involvement in the shooting.
Two additional adults who had been shot, a 22-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, transported themselves to HMC for treatment of gunshot wounds to their legs, immediately after the shooting. While at HMC, detectives interviewed them and another 20-year-old woman about their involvement in the shooting. The 22-year-old man and 26-year-old woman have subsequently been released from HMC.
With the assistance of video footage provided by the SPD Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), neighboring business locations, and numerous community members, in addition to statements provided by those involved, SPD can give the following investigative update to the community, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
All persons involved in the events directly related to the shooting at 3rd Avenue and Clay Street have been identified. Based upon the video recovered and the statements obtained, detectives have identified that at approximately 12:29 a.m., the 20-year-old man interacted with the 20-year-old woman, who was with the 22-year-old man and 26-year-old woman, near the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Clay Street, as vehicles and pedestrians assembled for an illegal street takeover. The interaction between the man and woman turned into a brief hostile argument before both sides separated. Witnesses stated that as this argument took place, they became aware that the 22-year-old man was armed with a handgun.
Approximately 9 minutes later, the 20-year-old man and the 21-year-old man approached the group consisting of the 22-year-old man, the 20-year-old woman, and the 26-year-old woman, who were standing on 3rd Avenue, north of Clay Street. The 20-year-old man and the 21-year-old man initiated a physical fight with the 22-year-old man, who was armed with a legally possessed firearm. Moments after the fight began, the 21-year-old man was shot repeatedly in the abdomen. This man withdrew from the fight, sought assistance from bystanders, and ended up in the 300 block of Denny Way, where he was later contacted by first responders.
As the fight between the 20-year-old man and the 22-year-old man continued, the 26-year-old woman also engaged in the fight, attempting to separate the 20-year-old man from the 22-year-old man. At one point in the fight, the 22-year-old man was able to momentarily break free from the 20-year-old man and attempted to run away, however he was caught by the 20-year-old man and the fight continued. During the fight disturbance, the firearm of the 22-year-old man fired numerous times, striking all three involved. Eventually the firearm became separated from the fight disturbance and was picked up by the 20-year-old man, who walked away with the gun. The 22-year-old man and 26-year-old woman met back up with the 20-year-old woman before leaving the scene for HMC.
This investigation remains ongoing and in the coming weeks will be referred to the King County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of charges.

Update: 9/7/2026
The Seattle Police Department continues to seek information leading to an arrest in the shootings on Sunday morning in the 300 block of Clay Street.
Today, SPD opened an online portal for people to share evidence. Through this link anyone can upload video or photos that show the minutes leading up to the shooting, images of the shooting, and possible suspect information. People can help with the investigation anonymously.

Detectives are investigating a deadly shooting that left one adult male deceased and three additional people injured near Belltown neighborhood.
Shortly after 12:42 a.m., dispatch received reports of two shooting victims, one in the 300 block of Denny Way and the other in the 300 block of Clay Street.
Officers arrived and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and another man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers provided aid until Seattle Fire Department medics arrived. Both men were transported to Harborview Medical Center (HMC). The man located in the 300 Denny Way was transported in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, he died at the hospital. The other man was transported in serious condition.
Later, two additional adult gunshot victims, a man and a woman, walked into Harborview Medical Center for treatment.
With the assistance of Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), the investigation revealed that an altercation involving three people occurred on the street shortly before the shooting.
Homicide Unit and Gun Violence Reduction Unit detectives responded to the scene.
Homicide Unit detectives are working to determine the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
