Police Investigating After Drone Hits Waterfront Ferris Wheel

Update: Detectives have referred the case to the Federal Aviation Administration for further review.

Police are searching for the owner of a small drone, which struck a Ferris wheel and crashed to the ground Wednesday on Seattle’s waterfront.

A security guard was making his rounds in the 1300 block of Alaskan Way around 4:45 PM when he heard a strange noise. He looked up on saw the drone strike the center of the 175-foot Seattle Great Wheel. The drone then fell to the pier below where it smashed into a plastic table, leaving a basketball-sized hole.

No one was injured in the incident and the Great Wheel did not sustain any significant damage.

Officers seized the drone at the scene but were not immediately able to locate the drone’s operator. Police are now working to identify the drone’s owner, something detectives have become increasingly proficient at over the last two years.2574413_drone-1 2574416_drone-3
