Farmers Insurance Group has named Seattle one of the most secure US cities for 2008.  Seattle took top honors in the large city category (over 500,000 residents) based on a number of factors.  The award, which was begun in 2004, looks at what it means to be a secure city. The motivation for this effort was the recognition that, in our post-9/11 world, safety has become a prime concern of communities across the nation. When families choose a place to live, they now not only look at the schools and job market; they also look at a community’s security status.

Farmers commissioned Sperling’s Best Places to conduct security surveys of 379 major metropolitan areas in the country, representing over 80% of the all of the nation’s residents. The criterion for determining the most secure cities is based upon public and private sources of information on unemployment, crime rates, severe weather, environmental hazards, risk of terror and live expectancy.

It was with great honor that Interim Police Chief John Diaz accepted the award from Farmers Insurance Group at a ceremony on May 13, 2009.
