Officer-involved shooting in Pritchard Beach Park

A Seattle Police officer shot and wounded an armed suspect in a South Seattle park early this morning. A Seattle Police K9 handler and his dog were checking Pritchard Beach Park just after 2 a.m. when he happened upon the suspect from an earlier shooting.

The officer saw the suspect sitting on a park bench.  Without a word, the suspect stood up with gun in hand and approached the officer. The officer drew his gun and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect raised his gun and pointed it at the officer. The officer fired at the suspect and hit him.

The officer immediately called for back-up and medical aid for the suspect.

The suspect was treated at the scene by Seattle Fire Department medics and then taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is 19 years old and will remain under guard until his release, at which point he will be booked into King County Jail.

Detectives from the Homicide and Assault Unit, as well as Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and began their investigation. The scene has been processed and the suspect’s handgun was recovered. The gun appears to be the same type of gun used in the earlier shooting and the suspect matches the description of the shooter.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.
