Man Critically Wounded In University District Stabbing

A 22-year-old man was critically wounded early Thursday after he was stabbed during a large brawl, involving as many as 10 people, in the University District.

Witnesses reported seeing a large fight near NE 42nd and University Way NE around 12:15 AM after a group of intoxicated men confronted a man and a woman on the street. The two groups exchanged words, and then blows, as they moved south on University Way.

During the fighta man in the first group reportedly shoved a woman from the second group and threatened to sexually assault her. In response, the woman pulled a knife from her coat and tried to stab the man. She missed, and a 22-year-old man stepped in to break up the fight. The woman stabbed the 22-year-old in the chest and fled the scene.

Police arrived and found the wounded man lying on the ground and called for medics.
