Early Morning Arson in South Park, Suspect Now in Custody

A 33 year-old man is now in custody following an early morning fire to a apartment building in South Park. The fire was later determined to be arson.

At approximately 3:30 this morning, Seattle Fire and Seattle Police responded to an apartment in the 1000 Block of South Thistle Street for a fire.

A man was seen pouring what was believed to be gasoline over an external stairway at the building, then lighting it was an open flame. A woman was trapped on the second floor of the burning building, but firefighters were able to get her out safely.

After extinguishing the fire, investigators called detectives from the Arson/Bomb Squad to the scene.  Detectives interviewed several witnesses who were able to provide the identity of the suspect.  Officers searched for the suspect, but he was not immediately located.

Earlier this afternoon the suspect was located in South Park  and taken into custody.  He will be booked into the King County Jail on Investigation of Arson.  This remains an active investigation.
