Detectives Investigating Overnight Shootings in Pioneer Square

Gang Unit detectives are investigating two separate incidents that occurred in the Pioneer Square neighborhood overnight less than an hour and several blocks apart.  One man is being treated for non life-threatening gunshot wounds and officers arrested and recovered a gun in the other incident.

On Friday night, just before midnight, officers responded to reports of shots fired near 3rd and Yesler.  Officers located shell casings nearby.  During an area search, officers located an 18-year-old male victim at 3rd and James.  He had been shot in the back and leg.  Seattle Fire responded and treated the victim and transported him to Harborview Medical Center.  The injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.  There is no current description of the suspect.  Gang Unit detectives responded and will handle the follow up investigation.

Less than an hour later officers patrolling the area heard shots fired in the 500 block of 2nd Avenue.  Officers determined that the shots were coming from inside the Sinking Ship Parking Garage.  Responding officers saw people running from the entrance and witnesses pointed out one man near a car as the suspect.  The suspect ran and got into a car but officers were able to take him into custody without further incident.  Officers were unable to locate any shooting victims at the scene.

Officers recovered a small plastic bag from the suspect containing white powder.  The substance later tested positive for cocaine.  Officers also recovered a handgun underneath the suspect’s car.  A records check showed that the 9mm handgun was reported stolen.   It was later entered into evidence.

The 20-year-old suspect, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing a firearm.  He was later booked into the King County Jail for felony assault, unlawful possession of firearm, possession of stolen property and drug violations.

The Gang Unit responded and will handle the follow up investigation.
