Command Changes and Promotions

As we approach a new era of our organization, it is critical that our leadership aligns with our priorities. ln keeping with this vision, I am making the following Command Staff announcements.

I sincerely appreciate the contribution of Marc Garth Green stepping into the role of Deputy Chief. However, we have agreed that it is best for the organization that he return to his civil service rank of Lieutenant. I sincerely appreciate his contributions to our department, our officers and our city.

In recognition of the heightened presence, importance and demand for resources at more than 300 special events and demonstrations each year, we are bringing back the Homeland Security Bureau. Assistant Chief Steve Hirjak will assume the role of Assistant Chief of that bureau. Assistant Chief Eric Greening will move from Patrol Operations to serve as Assistant Chief of Special Operations.

With these changes, I am pleased to announce the promotion of two members of our department.

Captain Tom Mahaffey will assume the role of Assistant Chief of Patrol Operations. Assistant Chief Mahaffey has served our city for 27 years, most recently as West Precinct Captain, where he worked diligently with our community, businesses and city leadership to address some of the most critical issues in one of our busiest precincts.

Lieutenant Matt Allen is being promoted to Captain, and will lead the West Precinct. Captain Allen has held various positions in his 28 years with the Department. His assignments include Patrol Operations at our North, East and South Precincts, SWAT, and most recently, Crisis Intervention Team Commander. Captain Allen has experience working across the Department and with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies on various complex projects, and has been instrumental in devising changes to our Crisis Intervention policy.

The role of Deputy Chief will remain vacant until further notice.

These changes are effective immediately.

We have worked incredibly hard to get to where we are today. I am confident that this excellent work will continue, and that we will move ahead with our culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
