On 10-28-2020 at 1750 hours, a mixed group of political supporters for various causes and candidates of both parties were peacefully sharing space on the corner of 15th NW & NW Market St, waving signs at rush hour traffic. A group of young teens (13-14 yo) approached a Trump supporter and started harassing him. At least one of the teens tried grabbing his sign away. The man holding the sign resisted and pushed the teens away, repeatedly. The teens continued surrounding him while trying to take his sign. He forcibly pushed at least one of the kids back, causing the teen to fall to the ground.
Onlookers who witnessed this started coming at the Trump supporter. One suspect (an adult male not associated with the teens) came up behind him and “sucker-punched” him. The Trump supporter pulled a compact pistol from his pocket and held it at his side, and everyone backed away from him until SPD arrived.
The pistol was legally possessed, and he was compliant with officers and safely disarmed. The teens showed an officer their video of the incident, which actually corroborated the sign holder’s claims. The unknown suspect who had punched him had fled the scene. Multiple witnesses were interviewed, and evidence was requested for investigation. Nobody requested medical aid, there was no property damage, and the sign holder indicated he was not interested in prosecution for the assault or the attempted theft of his sign. He and the other Trump supporters left the scene when the investigation was completed.
