On 07-19-2021 at 1329 hours, officers were dispatched to a disturbance incident in the 1000 blk of Alder St. Residents in an apartment building reported a neighbor’s breaking things in a common hallway and causing a large disturbance. It should be noted this subject has been involved in multiple investigations due to his decompensating mental health and increased self-medicating behavior. This behavior escalated to the point that he was throwing large objects through his plate glass windows, 3 stories below onto the sidewalk. Officers attempted to make contact to stop the threat to the walking public and were met with instantaneous hostility. Officers were assaulted and nearly assaulted by falling debris upon attempted entry. The suspect made multiple threats to kill the officers on scene and at one point exited his apartment armed with a cutting device; either a razor or a knife before ducking back into his unit. The suspect threw an unknown item striking one of the contact team members. Fearing it was a cutting tool, a 40MM launcher was used, however the suspect was able to retreat and barricade himself in his unit. The Hostage Negotiation Team responded and attempted to negotiate, unsuccessfully. SWAT responded and ultimately took the suspect into custody at 1857 hours. The suspect was transported to Harborview Medical Center and remains on hospital guard until medically cleared for booking into the King County Jail.

On 07-19-2021 at 2050 hours, a male suspect was under the influence of alcohol when he walked into the Othello Safeway and tried to open the liquor cabinet (locked) but he was unsuccessful. He then ran around the store looking for a screwdriver so he could break into the liquor cabinet. His actions scared away many customers and prompted store employees to call their manager for assistance. He then chased after a Safeway employee (a female/victim 1) for no apparent reason. This victim 1 was so afraid of the suspect’s action that she broke down crying and was unable to work after that. The suspect then came up to victim 2 (another female employee) and punched her in the face. After the assault, the suspect exited the store and victim 2 followed the suspect and waved down SPD officers while they were on another call. Officers tried to detain the suspect, but he refused to obey the officer’s command. As SPD officers were grabbing the suspect, he purposefully went to the ground and turtled up. It took 3 officers to get the suspect into custody. During the arrest, the suspect tried to bite the victim officer’s hands but the victim officer was able to pull his hands away. The suspect then kicked the victim officer’s knee causing minor pain. The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for Assault 3 (requesting charges for Assault 4).
