On 12-27-2021 at 0209 hours, a 911 caller reported a male armed with two knives was hitting a door and window near Boren Avenue and Pike Street. Upon arrival, officers located the subject with blood on his shirt near 8th Avenue and Pike Street in an obvious state of behavioral crisis, was unresponsive to officers’ communication, and was still armed with a kitchen steak knife in one hand and a kitchen butcher knife in the other hand. The subject was eventually followed to 1011 Pike Street where he barricaded himself inside the front entrance alcove but was not able to gain entry into the occupied hotel as the main entrance was locked. The subject then began pulling off a fire alarm and striking the alcove doors, dislodging them from their frame (later discovered not damaged and repaired on scene). The subject then exited the alcove, disregarded officer commands, and began walking towards officers while still armed with both knives. Three subsequent taser deployments were ineffective and the subject began pacing back and forth on the sidewalk, still unresponsive and uncommunicative. Patrol cars were fanned out around the subject to contain him on the sidewalk and provide a barrier between officers and the subject. Hostage Negotiation Team responded and took over dialogue with the subject, who eventually laid down on the ground and dropped both knives. The subject was eventually taken into custody and transported to Harborview Medical Center, reference emergent detention and the unlawful use of weapon charge. There were no 40mm available citywide. Lt. was advised and on-scene.
