Officer Shoots, Wounds Man Firing Gun in Squire Park Neighborhood

The Force Investigation Team is examining evidence after an officer shot and wounded a man who was firing a rifle in an apartment complex in the Squire Park neighborhood.

At 4:34 a.m., police began receiving reports of shots fired in the 1400 block of East Yesler Way. Officers arrived and heard gunshots and people screaming. 

Police entered an apartment complex and contacted the suspect, who was armed with a rifle. 

One officer fired at the suspect, striking him. The suspect then entered an apartment unit and refused to come out. 

Officers talked with the suspect, and eventually convinced him to surrender. Police took him into custody and he was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

Officers checked the apartment building and found no shooting victims, but did identify several apartment units with ballistic damage.

The Force Investigation Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting. Representatives of the Office of Police Accountability and the Office of Inspector General responded to the scene.

Per policy, the department will release video of the incident within 72 hours.

The Seattle Police Department is releasing body-worn video and the audio of a 911 call associated with Friday’s officer-involved shooting. Multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunshots in the 1400 block of East Yesler Way. Officers contacted the suspect, who was armed with a rifle. One officer fired at the suspect, wounding him.

The Force Investigation Team continues to investigate and will release additional details as they become available.

The involved officer is Yosef Al Hanaya, hired in 2020.
