Man Steals, Crashes Car with Baby in Back Seat

Officers arrested a man Thursday morning in Capitol Hill after he stole a car with an infant in the back seat, rolled the car over in a collision, and then fled the scene.

At 11:10 a.m., multiple 911 callers reported a rollover collision at 12th Avenue and East Olive Street. The driver of a Toyota sedan struck an unoccupied parked car, causing the Toyota to flip. The driver then fled the scene on foot.

Officers learned the Toyota had just been stolen several blocks away with an infant still in the back seat. The child’s father was working a delivery job and left his daughter in the running car as he ran to make a delivery. As he returned to his car, he watched the suspect drive it away with his daughter still inside. The father ran after his car until he saw he saw it crash and flip over. Thankfully, the child remained safely buckled in to her car seat and was uninjured.

The fleeing suspect walked right past the East Precinct, where officers arrested him after he was identified by witnesses.

Seattle Fire Department medics transported the 32-year-old suspect to Harborview Medical Center for a medical evaluation. Once cleared, officers will book the man into King County Jail for kidnapping and theft of a motor vehicle, with additional charges requested for DUI, reckless driving, and hit and run.
