When Fire personnel were on scene to treat the OD, they observed one patient was armed with a handgun. They backed out and as Seattle Police arrived. The suspect was identified, and it was determined he had a history of deliberate overdose suicide attempts. The suspect also had assaultive toward officers, mental, and weapon cautions. Patrol officers established a contact team and contained the suspect within his apartment. CRT established dialog with the suspect over the phone, via the 911 call taker. The suspect’s mental status continued to de-compensate as he spoke with police. The suspect told police he was armed with multiple weapons, including firearms, and said it was, “a bad idea” to put his firearm in a safe location. Probable cause existed for unlawful possession of firearms and a warrant was obtained. HNT was activated and SWAT responded. After nearly three hours of negotiation, the suspect reluctantly surrendered without incident. The suspect’s words, actions, and behavior were consistent with a suicide by cop attempt. It was determined the suspect was actually armed with a conducted electrical weapon, not a firearm. There were no firearms in the residence. The suspect was ultimately sent to the hospital on an ITA.
