SPD Adding Emphasis Patrols in University District

The Seattle Police Department is adding emphasis patrols in the University District neighborhood to address recent incidents of gun violence in the area, and is working to address several public safety issues at locations where violence has occurred.

Over the last 28 days the police responded to the following incidents in the University District:  

9/23 — At 1 p.m., officers were called to the 4700 Block of 7th Ave NE after a man was shot and wounded.  

9/28 — Officers responded to the 4200 block of 11 Ave NE at 10 p.m. after a man discovered a bullet hole and bullet in his bathtub  

10/1 — At 12:05 AM, police responded to reports of gunfire in the 4200 block of Brooklyn Ave NE. A motorist, believed to be fleeing the gunfire, struck and killed a pedestrian.   

10/2Police were called to investigate a shooting and fight outside a club  at University Way NE & NE 43rd St. The suspect fired several shots into the crowd, striking four victims before fleeing the scene.  

Police are investigating these incidents but have not yet made any arrests.  

To address gun violence and ensure the safety of the University District community, Chief Diaz is assigning emphasis patrols to the area in addition to SPD’s current 911 response there.

Chief Diaz and the Seattle Police Department continue to work closely with the University of Washington Police Department to address community concerns.
