Seattle Police arrested a 17-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man after an armed carjacking at a drive-thru ATM in Rainier Valley turned into a pursuit to Mercer Island.
Officers were called to the 7100 block of Martin Luther King Junior Way South on April 7 at about 1:04 p.m. The victim, a 40-year-old man, reported he’d stopped by the ATM at his bank to withdraw money when two unknown men approached him and pulled out a handgun demanding his keys and cell phone. The victim gave them what they asked for, and after the suspects took off with the car, flagged down help to call 911.
South Precinct Officers quickly spotted the vehicle, and a pursuit was initiated as the suspects tried to evade police by taking eastbound I-90 to Mercer Island. Officers involved saw a handgun tossed out of the passenger side of the carjacked vehicle.
After the pursuit came to a stop on Mercer Island, the 17-year-old driver and 20-year-old passenger were arrested for first-degree armed robbery with a gun.
The teen driver was booked into the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center. The man in the passenger seat was booked in the King County Jail.
The handgun involved in the incident and thrown from the window was recovered.
No one was injured.
