Detectives Investigating Fatal Collision in South Seattle

Seattle police detectives are investigating a fatal collision in South Seattle this morning.

At about 5:00 a.m., patrol officers responded to reports of a car crash in the 9800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South (MLK). There, police and the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) found a pedestrian down in the roadway.

SFD pronounced the woman deceased at the scene. She appears to be in her 30s.

Police determined that the woman walked across the train tracks, westbound, and a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), going south on MLK, struck her. A sedan then crashed into the SUV from behind, creating a two-vehicle collision.

The SUV came to rest partially on the southbound MLK train tracks. Police cordoned off the south traffic lanes and tracks. Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) detectives arrived to process the scene.

A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) came to the scene and evaluated the drivers, both young men. The DRE found no signs of impairment. They cooperated with police, and officers did not make any arrests. The men both had pain with minor injuries.

The King County Medical Examiner will take custody of the deceased and determine the cause and manner of death. The vehicles are not drivable and will be towed away. The Seattle Department of Transportation will respond to clean up the roadway.

If anyone has information, they are asked to call TCIS at 206-684-8923.
